North Bend Elementary in Humble, Texas, is not your typical school. When designing and constructing this space, it was important to the clients that this be a special place where architectural design meets innovation, and creativity blends seamlessly with functionality. At the heart of this vibrant educational space lies a series of carefully crafted acoustic installations designed to enhance the learning experience for both students and educators.
When the project kicked off, the team at Arktura was presented with a clear vision from the client. The initial renderings provided to our team closely resembled the final results, setting the stage for a collaborative journey toward a common goal. The primary objective was clear – create a playful atmosphere for the children while providing a visually friendly environment for adults, all while effectively managing excess sound.
To achieve this, Arktura’s team worked closely with the client and the design team to select the perfect pairing of colors and systems that would bring this vision to life. The result? A vibrant and functional acoustic solution seamlessly integrated into the school’s architectural design.
The system of choice for this scale of a project? It could only be our Atmosphera® collection. Thanks to its versatility, four different Atmosphera® systems were strategically utilized in seven distinct areas, each tailored to the space’s unique needs. From the Atmosphera® Contour system, creating a canopy around a tree structure, to the Atmosphera® Versa 3D system, with its wave-like surface around a whale sculpture, each system was chosen with specific design requirements.
But the journey wasn’t without its challenges. Coordinating around sculptural elements with unknown dimensions required meticulous planning and flexibility.
The integrated acoustic systems seamlessly complemented the sculptural elements, creating an overall atmosphere of joy for current and future students. The project not only met the aesthetic and acoustic requirements but also delivered a playful and functional environment that positively impacted the school’s atmosphere.
The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive since the first day of class at North Bend Elementary opened to students. The vibrant and acoustically optimized learning spaces have set the stage for an educational journey filled with creativity, inspiration, and endless possibilities.
From initial concept to final installation, the story of North Bend Elementary stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, creativity, and innovative design. It’s a place where sound solutions and colorful creations have come together to create an environment where learning truly knows no bounds.
