The Standard of Quiet – A Soft Sound® Educational Resource

March 7, 2024

Have you ever walked into a restaurant and immediately felt overwhelmed by the noise? Or struggled to concentrate in a busy office environment? You’re not alone. Sound plays a significant role in our perception of a space. In commercial settings, acoustics can have a substantial impact on your business.

Noise-filled commercial spaces, whether a retail store, restaurant, hotel, or office, can be overwhelming and distracting, making it difficult for people to concentrate or converse. For customer-facing establishments like restaurants, that can mean disgruntled customers who won’t be back for a return visit. For offices, that can mean distracted employees who struggle to focus on their work.

Cut through the noise with the proper commercial acoustic attenuation. Acoustics should never be an afterthought; it’s crucial to consider auditory coverage when designing spaces to improve wellness and productivity and reduce diversions.

There are many ways to tackle excess noise in the workplace, from suspended ceiling systems to extended baffle arrays, wall partitions, and more. To learn more about adequately attenuating new commercial spaces with acoustic coverage, read here

Put the auditory wellness of your employees and customers at the forefront of your commercial designs with Arktura.

Arktura & Soft Sound®

Arktura stands at the forefront of design and innovation, merging technology with architecture. This ethos has led to developing innovative, performative, aesthetically pleasing acoustic systems. We offer a full range of suspended ceiling systems, from rectilinear options like SoundBar® to more artistically creative form factors like Arborisa™.

Our Soft Sound® material is a versatile acoustic product that can be installed as wall tiles, ceiling baffles & fins, as well as an acoustic backer for metal ceiling panels. This dynamic and sustainable material absorbs excess noise, leading to quieter and more productive environments for all.

For modern applications, the standard material for acoustic panels is PET Felt, also known as polyethylene terephthalate. This material is exceptionally durable, strong, and has superior acoustic control compared to older drop ceiling panels.

Where is Soft Sound® Used?

Soft Sound® is made from 100% PET plastic, with up to 60% recycled content found in ordinary, everyday items like plastic water bottles. Beyond sustainability, this recycled material has many use cases, especially in Arktura products.

This fabric is adaptable and can be used as an acoustic backer when combined with our expanding range of perforated metal wall and ceiling panels. These panels are made from high-quality materials and often feature stunning perforated designs that can be further enhanced with an optional acoustic backer. The panels blend seamlessly from the ceiling to the walls, extending acoustic control beyond the ceiling and throughout the entire space.

Look to the sky with ceiling-suspended acoustic modules for concentrated acoustic attenuation. Our acoustic clouds and baffle systems utilize Soft Sound® material for auditory coverage. These systems are designed to be scalable to your space, providing acoustic coverage from above and absorbing sound waves as they travel upward.

Another way to bring the power of Soft Sound® to your next commercial project is with acoustic wall panels. We offer both Soft Sound® Tiles that can be field-trimmed and applied directly to walls, as well as standalone acoustic wall panels, such as SoftScreen®.

A Colorful Way to Improve Acoustics

Soft Sound® is not only a highly adaptable material but can also match your unique sense of style with its wide range of colors and finishes. It even offers customization options to help you achieve your desired look.

Our proprietary PET felt is available in a broad range of colors, from our standard Essentials Collection to more natural tones in our Elementals Collection. For a biophilic touch, we offer premium wood textures that bring the look of real wood without the weight and cost of natural timber.

These vibrant tones add a pop of color to your ceiling or wall, further enhancing aesthetics and acoustics. We currently offer over 30 Soft Sound® finishes to choose from.

Sustainability

Arktura Atmosphera Custom Analog 3D

Crafted with the environment in mind, Soft Sound® is a high-performance acoustic solution made entirely from PET with recycled content. This material can be installed in various applications, offering superior noise control and a beautiful aesthetic.

We believe true innovation starts with sustainability. Create a quieter, more comfortable space while minimizing your environmental impact with Soft Sound®.

Technical Specifications

Acoustic comfort is a necessary component of good design. But those aesthetically pleasing systems are nothing without great performance. Soft Sound® is the standard for high-performing commercial sound attenuation. This 12mm thick material is exceptionally durable, strong, and performative.

Its recycled material features a Class A fire rating and is a low VOC product with no added urea formaldehyde. For shipping convenience, all modules are flat-packed to save space.

NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient)

When measuring the effectiveness of acoustic materials, the building industry standard is the Noise Reduction Coefficient or NRC. This rating is listed as a single number (0 to 1) that tells you how well a material absorbs sound. Higher NRC = more sound absorption (better for reducing echo and noise), while a lower NRC = More sound reflection (less effective at dampening noise).

Soft Sound® offers an NRC of 0.35 when installed with no air gap and can reach a rating of 0.90 with a 150mm air gap.

At Arktura, we take our commitment to accuracy very seriously. That’s why we have launched an initiative to verify that the NRC rating we give our products is truthful and accurate. When designing acoustics for a large space, it is critical that the rating is precise to achieve the intended effect. To ensure this precision, we have developed TrueNRC™, which pairs realistic conditions with realistic frequencies based on typical speech patterns.
